In which Josh learns a lesson about fire

Story time! Ready....

So tonight Josh and a bunch of the teens from next door were burning a bunch of junk.

They were having so much fun that they decided to add to the fun and burn a mostly empty spray paint can.

So they thought, that was COOL, wouldn't two cans be cooler?? So, they put in 2 more cans, but these had a little bit more paint in them!

We had all (except Josh) just taken a few steps back when BOOM the cans exploded! Josh was knocked to the ground. He got up holding his ears and I rushed over to see how he was. He had blood streaming down his face but we couldn't tell how bad the cut was! We rushed him up to the house to further investigate while the others put the fire out and found Josh's glasses.

He has a pretty nasty cut on his face near his ear and a nice chunk missing from his ear. We decided he didn't need stitches, but Tammy (neighbor "mom") and I went and bought some butterfly bandages and stuff to get his cut cleaned out.

I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

And for all of you that are wondering...Yes, Josh is ok and nobody else was hurt.

Go here to read Josh's version of the story.

Water Woes!

Monday, January 28, 2008 9:25 AM Posted by Shannon Smith 1 comments
Josh and I had quite the "adventure" Sunday night/Monday.

Sunday night Josh and my Dad drove our Extension team back to Northland after church. So, my mom drove Cynthia and I home. We arrived at my house and I heard a very strange noise coming from our garage area. So, we took the baby inside and left her in her car seat (screaming cause she was hungry) and went to investigate what was going on. Our investigations led us to the basement where we found water gushing into the basement and puddles of water everywhere! GREAT! Now what?? (Remember, my husband is not home, I have a flooded basement and a starving baby!)

I called Josh to ask him what we should do. He told me to see if our neighbor could come over and look at the problem and get the water turned off. So, while I called him mom went up to make a bottle for Cynthia and try to get her calmed down. Luckily our neighbor wasn't in bed yet (it was 9:30 PM at this point) so he came over to take a look at what was going on. He thought we had a busted water pipe and got the water turned off for us.

Well, now we have no water, but we also had no heat! Our house has hot water heat so when the water was shut off that also shut off our heat.

I was so glad my mom was still there! Josh told me to just pack up our stuff for the next day and to go back home with Mom and we would just stay at my parents house overnight.

By this time poor Cynthia was so upset and just wanted her Mommy. Grandma and her bottle just weren't cutting it! So, I went and fed her and calmed her down and then packed up our stuff and headed back to Merrill.

Monday morning my landlord returned our call around 7:30 and after confirming that we didn't stay in our cold house overnight, said that he would go check out what was going on and get someone over there to fix it. They ended up calling a plumber who came over around 12:45 and found that a water pipe off our main water line had burst. I think it took him most of the afternoon (we were at work) to get it fixed, but he did it! So, our water and heat were fully restored. Oh, and while he was at it he fixed a minor complaint we had with our heating system, so that made us happy!!

I am so thankful for God's hand in all of this! We had been gone all day on Sunday. Mom and I think the water couldn't have broken too much before we got home or else our entire basement would have been covered in water. As it was there were only some puddles and none of our stuff stored down there got wet! We're also very thankful that our overnight without heat happened on a night/day when it was warmer out and not last weekend when it was -20 out! God is so Good and protects us and watches out for us!!

Hail Storm

While we were in church Wednesday night, there was a huge Hail Storm. Below you will see pictures of what we found when we went to my parents house after church!

This is on the deck.

This wasn't even the biggest specimen!

The tale of the lost pillow

Wednesday, June 20, 2007 10:21 AM Posted by Shannon Smith 6 comments
Do you ever get attached to things? It's silly, but I think most all of us do it. Well, for me - my attachment is a smallish feather pillow that I sleep with EVERY NIGHT! (Josh and I lovingly refer to the pillow as "Squishy Pillow".) This pillow gets slept with every night, and gets taken on every trip. Josh says that I squeeze the pillow to death in my sleep.

Sadly enough, I realized on our way home from Minneapolis on Sunday that I had left my pillow at the motel. Believe it or not, I almost cried over this fact. (It's the pregnancy hormones!) I briefly thought about begging Josh to turn around and go back for it, but I refrained from doing so. Josh really didn't understand why I was so upset about a pillow, but gave me a hug anyway.

I tried calling the motel on the way home, but got an answering machine and never got a call back.

When we got home, I of course had to find a replacement sleeping friend. (Besides my husband....he doesn't like to be squished at night.) So, for the last few nights, a nice teddy bear has been the recipient of my squeezing torture in my sleep.

Well, I decided to try calling the motel one more time today. Unfortunately, I got the same recording again and left another message. Lo and behold.....they called me back not long after! And......

THEY STILL HAVE MY PILLOW!!!!! HOORAY!!!!!

Our good friend Brad is living in Minneapolis and coming to visit this weekend, so he's going to go rescue my pillow and bring it to me. Thanks Brad!!

Isn't it neat how the Lord takes care of us? Even in the small seemingly inconsequential things like a pillow?

Today I am thankful for....

Remind me to never complain of being bored

Well, I just completed yet another crazy weekend! The past few weeks have been so crazy. When life slows down (which it probably won't....) I don't think I'll ever complain of boredom again!!

This weekend, Josh and I (and Brad Bladine) helped our new friend Megan with a project at the Wausau West High School. Megan is an English teacher there and also supervises the Pub Lab (where the students make the school newspaper and yearbook). This weekend our project was to rearrange the lab so that it functions better. Oh yeah, and we had some students there helping us as well.

Friday night we worked on emptying the lab, cleaning and organizing things to get moved back into the lab. This included removing old cables, cleaning the floors, and throwing away tons of old files and pictures and stuff. We also moved in the tables and arranged them in a much more functional manner. Saturday we moved in the computers and monitors and the rest of the furniture and then worked to organize everything.

The project was tons of work, (we were up late Friday night and up early Saturday morning) but the end result was well worth the effort we put into it. The students were so excited about the reorganization. Hopefully, they will be more productive now!! (Well, at least as productive as a group of High School students can be....)

Now, one might think our crazy busyness would end here and that Saturday evening was spent relaxing and recovering from all the work of the daytime. But, oh no! not us!! Saturday evening we joined my family and a bunch of friends for a bonfire. We were helping a friend from Scotland celebrate Guy Fawkes Day. So, we had a bonfire and cooked hot dogs and S'Mores and had a grand ol' time around the fire. We ended the evening at my parents house watching Finding Nemo.

Sunday was a rather normal Sunday for us. We had church and then dinner at my parents house. Sunday dinners are always great as we end up with tons of people there and there's always lots of laughter and joking going on. I wasn't feeling well Sunday afternoon so I went home and took a nap and actually ended up staying home from evening church because I still was feeling kinda bad. Today I'm feeling better though and feel a bit more rested, but still pretty tired!

Maybe I'll post some pics later if I get them. We took some before and after pictures of the Lab but I don't have copies of them yet.

Have a great week!! As for me, I'm going to try to get caught up on sleep!!

What a sad day!

I just read on Yahoo news that Bob Barker from the Price is Right is retiring in June. Not that I'm a number 1 fan or anything (I work during the day so I'm not home anyway....) but I don't quite think the show will be the same without him. I remember watching this show off and on as a kid and watching it with my Grandparents. Who hasn't heard the line "Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered." You can read the whole story here.

A weekend full of Activity

Sometimes it seems life never slows down. But being busy sure can be fun!! (Warning, this post is kinda long!!)

Friday night Joshua and I drove over to Northland to hear the SMS Men's Choir at the Artist Series. On the way over, we received a call from a friend (who will remain nameless to protect him!) who was having a problem and needed HELP!!! This friend had been driving through Crandon, WI the day before and had stopped to get gas and his credit card had been rejected and he was being accused of stealing gas. He called Josh since he knew Josh used to live in Crandon and had some connections there. So, we arrive in Crandon and head straight for the Police Station. Josh talks to the cops and then we head over to the gas station to pay for the "stolen" gas for our nice friend. You know, you'd think that if someone came in saying that they were going to give you money, you'd just accept it. Oh no - not this lady!! She tried giving Josh a hard time, but he won!! They finally accepted the money and gave Josh a "receipt" to prove that the gas had been paid for. His receipt was written on the back of a cigarette carton!! Well, that taken care of we proceed to go back to the Police so they can put down on the record that the gas had been paid for. Whew! What an adventure!!

With that escapade behind us we went to Subway and had supper with my parents who were also heading up for the concert. We had a nice time chatting with them and laughing over miscellaneous stories from the day.

The concert was very nice and the singing was great. There was even an appearance by a Barbershop Quartet that I particularly enjoyed! We also enjoyed sitting with Josh's friend Dan Childers and also Jenny, Josh's sister.

After the concert we were able to talk to lots of friends who we hadn't seen in a while. We also got to meet a couple of the SMS guys and enjoyed talking with them. I think we ended up talking to people until around 10:30.

Now, you might think oh 10:30 end of the night right? Nope, not for us crazy people. There was a Hockey Game Friday night and Josh and I really enjoy going to those, so us, Jenny and Holly (Jenny's friend) went to the game together. We had fun but didn't get back until around 1:15 AM or so!!

Josh and I spent the night with our good friends the Reese's. We always have a blast at their house. Phil and Shirley have 6 kids of which 5 are boys. So yes, it is never dull at their house! We were woken up by Thomas (one of the members of our fan club!) at 9 AM by him coming into our room and turning on the light to say good morning!! We enjoyed our visit with them and had fun playing with the kiddos and hearing what they are up to. (I'll post pictures later!)

Saturday evening we had a night of excitement which was supper and several crazy rounds of Uno Attack with the Eckdal's, Silvia, Liz, Jen, Dan and Mark on Saturday night. If you've never played this game you should try it sometime!!

Sunday was a bit calmer in which I was able to take a nap (yay!!) and we just did some relaxing.
Sunday evening at church the kids from church had the opportunity to show their parents and the other adults what they've been learning in Children's Church. Josh and I love teaching them on Sundays and have so much fun with the kids. Right now Josh is teaching through the book of Acts and the kids are really enjoying it. They sang 2 songs and then answered some questions about their lessons. We were so proud of the kids - they all did an excellent job!!

Wow, I'm tired just thinking back on all that we did this weekend. I'll post pictures later on.

Life Lessons

The following are some lessons that I have learned over the past several days/weeks.

Life Lesson #1
A case of a really bad flu, 3 doses of allergy medicine and being extremely tired result in a person not being able to stay awake for an entire day. (Poor Josh, he was sick for 2 1/2 days!)

Life Lesson #2
Do not add water to a pan that has just come from the oven in broiling mode. The pan will shatter. (See story below.)

Life Lesson #3
Always be careful when unscrewing burned out light bulbs as the glass might separate from the rest of the bulb. It is extremely difficult to get the rest of the light bulb out of the light fixture. (Thank the Lord for a strong husband and pliers.)

Life Lesson #4
When playing with a 10 week old Siamese kitten, anything that movies is fair game to be pounced on, attacked and played with! (There is no tragic story behind this lesson, this is just information for your general consumption.)

Life Lesson #5
You can get some great laughs when trying to take a self portrait using a digital camera, tripod and the timer on your camera. To succeed at this, you must be able to move fast and sit gracefully!

Life Lesson #6
Picture this: 4 guys crossing a slippery rock under 3 inches of water... One of them is bound to slip!

The Story of Broiling Pork Chops.....

9:18 AM Posted by Shannon Smith 1 comments
As told by Joshua Smith.

Sometimes I can be a real dipstick. Yeah. I can. The first part of this story isn't really my fault...

About a year ago, I fixed broiled pork chops. (This is not to say that it has been a year since I cooked.) I cooked them on stoneware, and the second that I opened the oven and took the stoneware out, it cracked in half. Come to find out, stoneware can't be used on un-even heat. Now, in my defense, I didn't know that, and even if I had, I wouldn't have thought of broiling as uneven heat, but anyway...

So tonight, I cooked pork chops again. We had a Pyrex dish for such nasty meals. It was a 9x13 pan and had some stains from it's other adventures, but otherwise had faired well...until tonight. I pulled the chops out of the oven, put them onto our plates, and put the Pyrex into the sink. Stains come off of dishes best in hot water, right? (I'll blame this oversight on my illness this past weekend...) So I sprayed water onto the dish, and it's reaction was somewhere between explosion and disintegration...

The good news is that I had the dish in the sink; the bad news is that the sink has a garbage disposal in it, and a good portion of glass fell into the disposal. J - U - N - K...

So... I needed to take off the garbage disposal to get out all of the glass, right? Did I mention yet that the directions were all wrong? Where there were supposed to be screws, there weren't and there is a hex-socket in the bottom whose purpose is still lost on me.

Anyway, I got the disposal off, cleaned it out thoroughly, and got it back together. All by myself, well with a lot of Shannon's help. :)

Oh........and it still works!!!

All I can say is WOW!!

Somehow, during a conversation at work today, it was brought up about the woman who holds the record with the Guinnes Book of World Records for giving birth to the most children.
We looked it up online and found this link.
This ladies 69 children included 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quadruplets.
I read somewhere else online that of these 69 children, 65 of them survived infancy.

WOW!! How in the world could one woman keep up with 65 children? I get overwhelmed just thinking of the possibility of simply becoming a mom, much less being a mom to that many children!!

This is the Kind of Week I Am Having

ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY

by Judith Viorst

I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now there's gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

At breakfast Anthony found a Corvette Sting Ray car kit in his cereal box and Nick found a Junior Undercover Agent code ring in his cereal box but in my breakfast cereal box all I found was breakfast cereal. I think I'll move to Australia.

In the car pool Mrs. Gibson let Becky have a seat by the window. Audrey and Elliott got seats by the window too. I said I was being scrunched. I said I was being smushed. I said, if I don't get a seat by the window I am going to be carsick. No one even answered. I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

At school Mrs. Dickens liked Paul's picture of the sailboat better than my picture of the invisible castle. At singing time she said I sang too loud. At counting time she said I left out sixteen. Who needs sixteen? I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

I could tell because Paul said I wasn't his best friend anymore. He said that Philip Parker was his best friend and that Albert Moyo was his next best friend and that I was only his third best friend. I hope you sit on a tack, I said to Paul. I hope the next time you get a double-decker strawberry ice-cream cone the ice cream part falls off the cone part and lands in Australia.

There were two cupcakes in Philip Parker's lunch bag and Albert got a Hershey bar with almonds and Paul's mother gave him a piece of jelly roll that had little coconut sprinkles on the top. Guess whose mother forgot to put in dessert? It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

That's what it was, because after school my mom took us all to the dentist and Dr. Fields found a cavity just in me. Come back next week and I'll fix it, said Dr. Fields. Next week, I said, I'm going to Australia.

On the way downstairs the elevator door closed on my foot and while we were waiting for my mom to g
o get the car Anthony made me fall where it was muddy and then when I started crying because of the mud Nick said I was a crybaby and while I was punching Nick for saying crybaby my mom came back with the car and scolded me for being muddy and fighting. I am having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, I told everybody. No one even answered.

So then we went to the shoestore to buy some sneakers. Anthony chose white ones with blue stripes. Nick chose red ones with white stripes. I chose blue ones with red stripes but then the shoe man said, We're all sold out. They made me buy plain old white ones, but they can't make me wear them.

When we picked up my dad at his office he said I couldn't play with his copying machine, but I forgot. He also said to watch out for the books on his desk, and I was careful as could be except for my elbow. He also said don't fool around with his phone, but I think I called Australia. My dad said please don't pick him up anymore. It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

There were lima beans for dinner and I hate limas. There was kissing on TV and I hate kissing. My bath was too hot, I got soap in my eyes, my marble went down the drain, and I had to wear my railroad-train pajamas. I hate my railroad-train pajamas. When I went to bed Nick took back the pillow he said I could keep and the Mickey Mouse night light burned out and I bit my tongue. The cat wants to sleep with Anthony, not with me. It has been a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. My mom says some days are like that.

Even in Australia.

The next time you are having a bad day...remember Alexanders'...and smile...life is good!
